EPM Symptoms Seen In Training

** While these symptoms are in no way all that may be associated with EPM, they are the ones
most commonly exhibited by members' horses here at ESN. Most horses will demonstrate one of more of these symptoms at some time in their life, and that is not cause for alarm. It is the *accumulation* of symptoms that tends to indicate the likelihood of a protozoan infection.

Change In Attitude:

Tremors
Uncharacteristic behavior
Anxious, apprehensive or spooking behavior
Head tossing or throwing
Unusually high or low head carriage
Irritability or aggression
Lack of enthusiasm and/or lethargy
Depression
Sensitivity to touch and/or to grooming

Changes In Movement:

Bucking (may be due to back soreness)
Resistance to backing or cantering (loping)
Short, choppy gait
Asymmetrical gait
Unexplained lameness
Lameness that seems to travel (to be transient throughout the horse)
Toe Dragging (front or back)
Weakness in hind limbs (falling out from under you, buckling over in rear pastern area while being worked)
Cross-firing or switching hind leads frequently
Traveling heavily on the front limbs
Stumbling and/or tripping
Showing interference in front or rear limbs (causes them to "clip" or step on themselves)
Difficulty in going up or down hills or inclines
Difficulty with complex gaits
Carrying head to the outside of the arena
Inability to collect or gather themselves

It is our hope that, through an awareness of these symptoms, an earlier diagnosis of EPM can be made, enhancing the chance of the horse's recovery.
